We explore the development of models for effective pairings and provide the rationale for these models. Evidence is offered from interview data from paired students, analysed against Maslow's hierarchy of needs, from one of the institutions and from evaluations from paired students from the other institution. Practical implications of managing paired placements are identified and discussed.
