W.2000The purpose of this research is to show that performance appraisal methodologies originating from another culture, may not be acceptable by the local people simply because these methodologies do not fit into the local culture. Western concepts of management, in general, do not always fit into other cultures. Such foreign concepts may have to be modified to suit the local condition. What this research has done is to develop an ideal model for performance appraisal for the Singaporean culture derived from the best practices around the world but modify to suit the local culture. For without such alterations, even best practice may not be easily accepted into the local working environment. Through a series of interviews with Singaporean appraisers, this ideal model is tested against their preferences. The conclusion is that the model fits the Singaporean working environment. At the same time, this research also discovered that companies do not consider performance appraisal to be an important aspect of their work, despite the fact everybody does it.158.7Swansea University http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.639159Electronic Thesis or Dissertation |
