To fulfill its purpose the study is based on the questions; How is the gender awareness among the teachers?
How does the teachers work to achieve a gender equal education? For the data collecting process semistructured qualitative interviews has ben used as method. Five PE teachers were interviewed, 3 women and 2 men, in the ages between 35 - 60 whom are active in the elementary and upper secondary school sector. The results shows that the grade of gender awareness among the teachers vary and that the women in general tend to be more gender aware than the men. The men declares themselves as being pretty gender aware och does not experience any particular differences between the sexes when in the sports hall. The effect of this is that none of the men is given much, if any, reflection about the gender equality while planning and executing their lessons. The women on the other hand, especially the younger ones, have a high level of gender awareness. This is shown by that they continuously evaluate them selves, and their approach towards their students and they continue to strive to evolve and always improve in the subject. All interviewed teachers has in common that they find the work towards a gender equal teaching challenging and that none of them has had much, if any, education in gender studies in their university studies.
