Summary:This study examined how students report the relationship between feelings of mattering at school and how their needs are being met while at school. The study included 134 students, in grades nine through twelve, in five alternative programs in Vancouver, B.C. The meeting of students needs and the measurement of perceptions of mattering were determined through the use of two questionnaires. The instrument measuring needs fulfilment employed scales relating to security, social, esteem and self actualization needs. The questionnaire measuring perceptions of mattering utilized scales measuring perceptions of importance, attention, dependence and ego - extension.
