Summary:碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 應用外語系 === 106 === The study aimed to explore the effects of using game-based English instruction on EFL fourth graders’ word recognition, learning motivation and their perspectives after the instruction. The participants were 13 fourth graders at an elementary school in Nantou County, including 8 boys and 5 girls in a class. The experiment of the study took six weeks, two sessions every week. Data from pre- and post-tests on word recognition, motivation questionnaires before and after the given instruction and the interview of their perspectives were collected to examine its effects. The results revealed that using games to practice vocabulary had significant impact on learners’ ability in the word recognition. Game-based also enhanced students’ learning motivation. This study suggested that teaching vocabulary through games not only help students memorize the words easily but also motivate and entertain students. The conclusion of this study demonstrates that learning vocabulary through games is an effective and interesting means which can be recommended to use in the classroom. The pedagogical implications of the study and suggestions for further research were provided.
