The aim of this study was to understand the way children responded to the emotional state of the protagonist in the picture books. A qualitative reaserch approach was applied in this study. Data with children’s emotional state talk were collected in shared-reading activities. Sixteen five years old children were observed in ten times shared-reading activites for ten weeks. Every time choose one book for a week. Videos were transcribed and coded for the form of emotional state talk in order to analyze how children recognized emotion state and how to explain the emotion state. The result showed that (1)children recognized different emotion by facial expression, action, image and external cause. (2)children explained the cause of emotional state by plot, protagonist’s desire and beliefs in picture books, also illustrate the consequence of emotional state by protagonist’s behavior as well. At last, this study provided suggestions to the preschool educators and the researchers who were interested in studying prechool children’s emotional state talk.
