This study examined whether using technology in English remedial teaching helps lower-achievers improving their English learning performance and attitude. It attempted to make use of the advantages of technology, such as diversity, interest and immediacy, in English remedial instruction and observe if the English learning performance and attitude would improve.
This study used action research to observe four fifth-grade lower-achievers at an elementary school in Tainan. Data collected included pre- and post-English test scores, questionnaire results on English learning attitude, class observation records, interview notes with students, and teaching reflection notes. Quantitative data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and qualitative data were analyzed with categorization to observe the English learning performance and attitude had changed.
Based on the results, this study makes the following conclusion.
1. Interactive technology helps the lower-achievers developing English performance.
2. Interesting technology improves the learning attitude of the lower-achievers.
3. Integrating technology in teaching requires more flexibility in lesson design.
4. Effective use of technology depends upon the effective lesson planning.
This study concludes with suggestions to teachers on applying technology in remedial teaching, and possible directions for future research.
