Audiences enjoy not only visual and sound effects, but also the exotic cultures from movies. Chinese subtitles are necessary for Taiwanese audience to understand the content of movies. Therefore, the quality of Chinese subtitles plays an essential role in foreign movies. This study aims to analyze the translation strategies of the German movie „Look who's back“. In fact, most of the Chinese subtitles in German movies are translated based on English, which leads to the loss of original meaning. The author was informed by the movie company that the translation of „Look who's back“ is basically translated from German. Via the interview with the film translator, in addition, a further understanding of the actual process of translation is gained. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Peter Newmark’s „semantic and communicative translation“ and combined with different subtitle translation strategies. According to the analysis of statistical data, subtitles translation rely mainly on communicative translation while semantic translation subsidiary. Finally, conclusion of this study and further suggestions of improving the translation in non-English movies are laid out. SHIEH, SHU-MEI 謝淑媚 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 189 zh-TW
