Summary: | 碩士 === 國立嘉義大學 === 數理教育研究所 === 106 === Educational equity is a core element and principle for school mathematics. In fact, mathematics for all has been internationally considered a key issue of mathematics education. This case study was a part of a project supported by the Ministry Of Science and Technology of Taiwan. Three low-achieving elementary school students participated in this study. The main purposes of this study were to develop a story-based remedial instructional module for these students and to investigate their learning performance of Volume and Surface Area. The researchers referred to literature and textbooks of unit "Volume and Surface Areas" for grade five, integrated the self-created story with a building block factory and characters into learning activities to enhance students’ learning motivation. Hands-on operation and observation, questioning and discussion, coloring and pictorial representation were used to improve students' understanding of concepts. Through pretest, posttest, interview, observation, and related documents, major findings of this research were as following: 1) Story-based remedial instructional module not only aroused students’ learning interests and problem solving interests, but also promoted their comprehension of the meaning of Volume and Surface Areas. 2) The operation and observation of specific figures could help case students connect with various characterizations and construct abstract concepts. 3) Using questions, discussions and exercises improved students’ ability to calculate the composite volumes and surface area. 4) The crayon coloring and observation helped students understand the surface area formula and the composition of the composite surface area.
