Six simplification strategies—superordinate terms, transfer, approximation, synonymy, converseness, circumlocution and paraphrase, proposed by Blum & Levenston (1978), were utilized to analyze and quantify the adoption of the aforementioned strategies used in the subtitles and the dubbing. The study, based on the “skopos theory”, aims to understand whether simplification theories apply to dubbing translation, and the factors determining the adoption of strategies. The research results show that, firstly, despite distinct translation constraints and attributes, the six strategies can be applied to both the subtitling and the dubbing to facilitate information transformation and the consequent goal to communicate with the audience. Secondly, the quantified research data suggest that audience types determine how strategies are adopted, with the subtitles striving to be concise for the general public and the dubbing staying as colloquial as possible for the immature minds. Furthermore, it is advised that both versions more frequently adopt the “circumlocution and paraphrase” strategy to effectively turn the source language into terms that function as the vessel of target audience’s culture and communication so as to successfully reproduce the same entertaining effect as intended by the source language. This study expects further comparison research to offer established strategies for translation practices of subtitling and dubbing. 高煥麗 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 110 zh-TW
