Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄第一科技大學 === 應用英語系口筆譯碩士班 === 105 === Audiovisual translation takes up a major role in the field of translation. Among the subcategories of audiovisual translation, subtitling appears in people’s daily lives much more frequently than others; thus it becomes the topic of the study. In this study, the researcher analyzes the strategies for translating proper nouns, idiomatic expressions and slangs in Taiwan’s and China’s translations of the same comedy films, which are 21 Jump street, 22 Jump street, Deadpool, Neighbors and Ted 2. The translation strategies and the translation theories proposed by Peter Newmark and Hans Vermeer are set as the criteria before examining the two translations. After analyzing the strategies that are adopted in Taiwan’s and China’s translations, the one that better meets Newmark’s and Vermeer’s theories would be suggested when translating comedy films.
The findings show that on the aspect of proper nouns, the translation strategies of paraphrase and adaptation are used more often in Taiwan’s translation than in China’s. China’s translators adopt the translation strategies of transliteration and literal translation more often. As to the translations of idiomatic expressions, both Taiwan’s and China’s translators largely use the translation strategies of paraphrase and adaptation. In slang translations, Taiwan’s and China’s translators mainly use communicative translation but the translation strategy of literal translation is used more often in China’s translation.
Overall, Taiwan’s translation better meets Newmark’s and Vermeer’s theories because it is translated communicatively and the goal of creating the entertaining effect in comedies is achieved.
