Information exchange in different culture must be completed by translation. But technical constraints of subtitling obstruct translators to render source information into concise target forms. How can a translator overcome this dilemma? This thesis adopts the Wolf of Wall Street as a case study to explore the translation strategies of F word in Chinese subtitling.
The thesis comprises five chapters. Chapter one reveals research motivation, structure of the thesis and a brief introduction of the movie. Chapter two probes into definition, sociolinguistics and modern linguistics of F word, as well as characteristics, restrictions and translation principles of subtitling. Chapter three illustrates the methodology of the research. Chapter four categorizes several translation strategies by analyzing charts and examples. Chapter five proposes conclusions and directions for further research.
