The experimental group had English songs and rhymes instruction while the control group did not. An English word recognition test conducted before and after the study. The experimental group had a retention test after four weeks. The data of pretest, post-test and a retention test was quantitatively analyzed by Paired-samples t Test and Independent-sample t Test. Additionally, a feedback questionnaire was administered to the experimental group to understand the opinions about learning vocabulary through English songs and rhymes. The research results showed that English songs and rhymes have significantly promoted the English word recognition ability, but the difference of both groups’ performance in English word recognition tests did not reach significant level. However, the experimental group of different academic achievement holds a positive attitude toward the effects of English songs and rhymes instruction, including on the word recognition ability, self-confidence and motivation in English learning. Finally, some suggestions based on the findings of the study were provided for those who are interested in English songs and rhymes instruction and for further studies.
