碩士 === 國立高雄第一科技大學 === 應用英語系口筆譯碩士班 === 104 === This research is conducted to analyze the two Chinese translations of Li Deng-xin (黎登鑫) and Lee Wen-jun (李文俊) from the relevance-theoretic perspective. Specifically, the translation of Benjy section in The Sound and the Fury is investigated to see how the translators render the locution of Benjy. Generally, this utterance style can be shown by three elements: (1) awkward sentences that lack subjects, (2) nonstop sentences with and, (3) personification of inanimate objects. For our discussion, examples fitting these three features are respectively analyzed. The findings show that Li Deng-xin’s translation has no consistent translation strategy. Li freely translates the words and revises the sentences. He even mistranslates the original text from time to time. So, the relevance between the original text and the target texts is low. This way of translation also leads to the loss of interpretive resemblance and optimal relevance. As for Lee Wen-jun’s translation, Lee keeps most of the wording and utterance style of Benjy while providing reader-friendly reading experience to target readers, and he seldom mistranslates the original words or revises the words. He uses the words consistently so that his translation can reach interpretive resemblance and optimal relevance. Through this research, it is hoped that translators can get to understand the reasons that cause inappropriate translation, and target readers can know how translation is produced and the difficulty of rendering the texts with unique styles.
