The movie Monga shown on the screen in 2015 is one ofthe Taiwanese movies that ever attended Internationale Filmfestspiele Berlin. Its plot mainly depicts the intermediate period of old Monga District that once experienced urban development, ethnic ideology, collision between modern concepts and traditional values, and racial conflict and integration. Through the vivid portraits of characters and background, the movie enables its audiences to actually see the epitome of the Age of Monga District.
This thesis,by analyzing the Chinese and German subtitles of the movie Monga,seeks to explore the transcultural phenomena of these two languages in the wake of translation and further to discuss adaptation or alienation-oriented characteristics existing intranslated subtitles of movies. Different from most academic studies that usually focus on original texts and its Chinese translation as research source which mainly focus on original texts and take Chinese versions as subsidiaries, instead, this study instead chooses the Chinese text of Monga as priority and its German version as a secondary source. Under this structure, it aims to understand whether these two languages can reach certain equivalence with each culture or on the contrary, create conflicts during translation. With Andre Lefevere’s idea of cultural orientation as basis and Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence and Lawrence Venuti’s translation strategy of adaptation and alienation as support, this thesis discusses the problems resulting from interpreting two different languages by studying the Chinese and German subtitles of Monga and further intends to search for a proper translation strategy for films.
