Summary:碩士 === 國立彰化師範大學 === 翻譯研究所 === 103 === Subtitle translation is subject to the constraints of time and space, and reduction is often seen in subtitling. How to adopt strategies to fully deliver the messages in the source text is one of the priorities for subtitle translators during the translation process. This study aimed to compare the two official Chinese subtitle versions of The Mystery of Porcelain from Discovery Channel. Differences in accuracy, cultural expression and word choice were discussed in this study to find which version better mirrored the messages in the source text. Based on the results of this study, the strategy of literal translation was often adopted in version one, which led to comprehension difficulties among target viewers and some culturally-specific elements were lost due to the adoption of literal translation. Also, the translation in some cases was quite different from the source text and distorted the original messages. By contrast, version two adopted different strategies to reflect the cultural background of the documentary and better deliver the messages in the source text, and the wording was more in line with the understanding of target viewers. In the meantime, many mistranslations in version one were revised in version two. Given the fact that version two was released later, it could be seen as a revised version of the former.
