Summary: | 碩士 === 國立臺北教育大學 === 課程與教學研究所 === 102 === The purpose of this study is to investigate the development and effectiveness in utilizing the concept of “Philosophy for Children” in structuring a reading project to enhance the critical thinking ability of students. The method of action research was used in this study and students from second grade elementary schools were chosen as the study subjects. Study data was collected during 20 class sessions by conducting tests, interviewing with study subjects, collecting documentations and preparing teaching logs. Data collected during the process were analyzed and examined to get the study result.
This study has the following conclusions and discoveries after summarizing the study results:
A.The concept of philosophy for children is useful in structuring reading projects that can enhance the ability of critical thinking. Steps of the structuring is as followed:
B.Learning achievements on the reading project of “Enhancement of Critical Thinking utilizing the concept of Philosophy for Children
Study results showed that this teaching project is helpful in enhancing children’s three critical thing abilities, i.e. questioning, reasoning and value judgments, and their study attitudes were improved as well.
C.Challenges in teaching that the author faced and the coping strategies
a.The author lacks the professional expertise of philosophy. Literature reading and expert opinions consulting were needed during the study in order for the study to get to another level
b.The author herself is currently an elementary school teacher, certain current teaching habits therefore may have impacts on this study. Class responses and peer teacher feedbacks will be needed to get a better study result.
c.Study subjects in a class were more than needed. Grouping will be necessary before common discussions could be made.
d.Teaching material structures were not well organized. More aspects should be taken into consideration while choosing teaching materials, and class preparation should be more detailed.
e.There were gaps between children learning interests and the teaching goals. Optional and mandatory learning materials were provided during class discussion then.
D.Lessons learned and reflections of the author during the teaching process
a.Material design should be close to children’s life experiences and focus on the children themselves.
b.The purpose of education should be on inspiring children in order for them to develop the abilities of investigating and thinking.
c.The author has made improvements during the study in aspects like critical thinking, reading comprehensions and teacher-student interactions skills.
The author made suggestions on teaching practice and future study topics based on the above conclusions and discoveries.
