But few study discussed about the determinant of tactics usage. Empirical study has discussed how interviewer attributes affect applicant defensive IM tactics. But the relationship between applicant attributes and defensive IM tactics is still unknown. Therefore in this study we try to fill up this research gap, to test the effects of applicant and interviewer attributes together. An experimental design was conducted. The scripts are used to manipulate different attributes of interviewer, including serious, friendly and neutral. Big five personality inventory was adopted to measure applicants’ personality. The results pointed out that applicants with high agreeableness seldom use excuse tactic. Applicants with high openness to experience prefer to use justification tactic. However, the direct effect of interviewer attributes on applicant’s defensive IM tactics choice was not identified as expectation. But results of sub-group analysis showed that to different extent of interviewer friendliness, applicant’s personality exert some effect on defensive IM tactics choice. In this study we can find that interviewer and applicant attributes both affect on applicant defensive IM tactics choice. These results also provide some suggestion to the interviewer that in job interview process, the interviewer should avoid showing too much emotional reaction, which may interfere in applicants’ defensive IM tactics choice.
