This study is based on 28 class observations and 17 interviews with the classroom teacher in the fifth grade in an elementary school. Results indicated a working system in teachers’ practices of educational connoisseurship and criticism. Four levels from outside to inside in this system are: (1) Operation: teacher’s teaching practices and how he/she applies it. (2) Criticism: teacher’s practical knowledge accumulated from experiences and professional training. (3) Connoisseurship: teacher’s subtle and personal appreciation about students. (4) Self-expectations: personal standards of being a good teacher, compromising with socially recognized criteria. Across the four levels, lies the artistry of teachers’ practices of educational connoisseurship and criticism which can be described as (1) the prototype: Observation and informal learning; (2) the intention: Taking every precaution at very beginning; (3) the attitude: Helping those students whom teachers don’t like; (4) the wisdom: Teaching students in accordance with their aptitude; (5) the foundation: Being students’ authoritative trustee. Finally, the researcher further discuss the practical considerations of educational connoisseurship and criticism, the direction of future research, the potential theorization, as well as the professional growth of the researcher.
