Description
Summary:碩士 === 雲林科技大學 === 應用外語系碩士班 === 99 === This study aims to explore the effect of the phonics instruction on Taiwanese young EFL learners’ acquisition of orthography, word recognition and picture-reading comprehension. Twelve third graders who started learning English were given a pretest and a post-test after a seven-week-phonics instruction at a buxiban. After the post-test, each of them was also interviewed for a closer inspection on the extent to which the child learners might benefit from the given instruction. The findings indicate that all of the students made great progress on orthography and word recognition. In particular, most of them have learned to employ the phonics rules to read and comprehend the assigned pictures. Furthermore, their self-reports in the interviews and questionnaire responses reveal that they have learned to apply the given rules to overcome their spelling difficulties and acquire new words. This study presents the details of the results and addresses the implications of the phonics instruction for Taiwanese children’s’ English learning.
