Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立東華大學 === 教育行政與管理學系 === 99 === Foreign Spouses’ Continuous Learning: A Case Study on a Literacy Program in a Taoyuan Elementary School Abstract In this research we did a case study on the processes of foreign spouses participating in literacy program using qualitative analysis approach. Subjects are foreign spouses who attended literacy program in an elementary school in Taoyuan County. We collected and analyzed the data with qualitative methods such as interviews and observations, in order to understand the motivation and processes of how they came to Taiwan, how they come to participate in the literacy program and their motivation and reasons for continuing on with the program. From the interviews and observations, combined with literature review, we have the following conclusions: 1. Financial situation is the main reason for foreign spouses to marry and move to Taiwan. 2. Learning experience in literacy program have helped them boost their confidence and expand their views. 3. Those who chose to stay and continue with the program are more motivated and diligent. The biggest motivation factor is to improve their abilities to educate their children. 4. Work and house chores are the main obstacles in learning. 5. They find Zhuyin Fuhao (Bopomofo) and Chinese character writing most difficult. 6. Unstable funding for literacy program makes implementation of such literacy program difficult. Based on these findings, this research will propose useful suggestions for the education authorities and future researchers. 1. Expand the research scope and cover literacy classes from other counties to obtain more comprehensive results. 2. Include subjects who participated in the literacy program for less time (less than one year) as a contrast. 3. The education authorities should develop curriculum more suitable for foreign spouses. 4. Provide stable funding for literacy classes.
