Two classes of fifth-grader students in an elementary school in Taipei were recruited in the study and served as the experimental group and control group respectively. The research data were collected through students’ background questionnaire, a pretest and a posttest of word pronunciation and were analyzed by an independent-samples t test and a paired-samples t test. The research results indicated that there was significant difference in the posttest (t =11.21; p = .000< .05) between two groups before and after the study, which suggests that phonetic instruction is helpful in improving students’ word pronunciation. Moreover, the experimental group improved in three aspects: learned words, unlearned words and pseudo words, which also suggests that phonetic instruction has better effects on the accuracy of word pronunciation than phonics instruction.
