This study was the one-group pretest posttest design research and conducted in spring, 2010. The instruments included the E-books of Chinese idioms, the questionnaires of motivation, learning achievement, and the satisfaction levels for collecting students’ quantitative data. In addition, the learning journal and the semi-structured questionnaire for examining the quantitative data. Fifty-seven of fourth- grade students were the participants of the study. The questionnaires of motivation included four sections: attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction levels. This researcher tried to examine whether the participants can be motivated if the E-books were designed to apply the key elements of these sections. The questionnaire of satisfaction levels was used to examine whether the E-book meet the students’ needs or not. This questionnaire included four sections: user interface design & control, contents design, function design, and animation design. Descriptive statistics and paired-samples t test were the main methods to analyze data of the study. Besides, eight of participants were randomly chosen to attend the interview sessions for evaluating the quantitative data. The results of this research were concluded as follows: 1. The E-books of idiomatic phrases which applied the ARCS Models could promote fourth-grade students’ motivation, leaning achievement, and the satisfaction levels. 2. The animation, songs and the dialogs of the E-books were the key elements to catch the attention of participants. Topics about daily life in the stories made the connection between participants’ life and idioms. Learners expected to read the following E-books during the experiment for the continuous life stories. Moreover, the non-scoring function and instant feedbacks in the exercise section of the E-books increased confidence of the participants. Thus, learners would use what they have learned to day-to-day life and felt contented with the learning during the experiment. 3. The results of the experiment show that the participants had made significant progress on the motivation and learning achievement scores. This experiment also explained that applying ARCS model in E-books for idioms learning at elementary schools could promote student’s motivation and learning achievement in learning idiomatic phrases 4. The idiom E-books of “The Tea Made by Grandpa”, which integrated ARCS models and designs with the multimedia principles, were suitable for fourth-grade students to learn idiomatic phrases. The researcher expected the results of this study could provide some suggestions for designing teaching materials of idiom for elementary teachers. In addition, this research also suggested some directions to design the digital instructions of idioms for both teachers and instructional designers who are interested in idiom teaching.
