Four hundred and sixty two higher grade pupils from an elementary school of Yunlin County were chosen to do the testing as the sample for this research. The Chinese reading comprehension test,the reading comprehension strategy scale and interview the comprehension ability and reading comprehension strategy were chosen to be tools for this research.The data were analyzed with t-test and multiple regression analysis. The major findings were summarized as follows: 1. Both fifth and sixth grade, among five reading sub-ability, students'' inferential comprehension ability is the best and summarization ability is the worst. 2. This test approved that students'' reading comprehension ability had differences in literal comprehension and summarization ability between genders. 3. Strategies of social and affection, metacognition Strategie had the higher average from all the strategies. On the other hand, note-taking, summarization, and imagery have the lower average. 4.
