The study aims to investigate which of the two types of exercises, multiple choice (MC) or original sentence writing (OSW), helps learners gain better vocabulary retention, and within almost the same amount of time, which would be more efficient. In addition, the attitudes which the students hold toward the types of the exercises are discussed in this research.
In this study, the subjects were second-year junior high students, and they were tested with exercises of three conditions: one set of MC, three sets of MCs, and one set of OSW. An immediate posttest was used to find out the short-term retention result and after a week, a delayed posttest was used for the long-term result. A questionnaire was administered to investigate the subjects’ attitudes towards the three conditions.
According to the result processed by the statistical program, with regard to the short-term result, 3 sets MCs significantly outperformed one set of OSW in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. As to the long-term result, the retention score of 3 MCs was quite similar to that of 1 OSW, albeit no significant difference regarding to effectiveness and efficiency.
As to the subjects’ evaluation, doing 3 sets of MCs was considered to be the most effective and favored by most of the subjects. Doing one set of OSW was disfavored most.
The conclusion was that, in terms of short-term vocabulary retention, doing 3 sets of MCs was effectively and efficiently better than doing one OSW. Furthermore, the effect of task types on long-term retention did not make significant difference. Moreover, doing three MCs was preferred by most subjects for its efficacy.
