A survey method was used to collect data, and five mentors were interviewed afterwards. A questionnaire named “Survey on professional competencies and prerequisites of mentors for early childhood education” was sent to 201 mentors, who were chosen from those mentors joined a mentor program held by Ministry of Education in 2007. In 201 questionnaires of sent-out, 180 returned, the return rate was 89.55% . Data were categorized and analyzed using various statistical tools including frequency distribution, percentage, average, T-test, and one-way ANOVA. The results are summarized as the follows: From the mentors’ points of view, thirty-one professional competencies and four prerequisites are found and categorized into four aspects for early-childhood-education mentors. Among them, professional responsibility and ethics are the most important . For mentors of different gender, three significant differences were found for their opinions about competencies and prerequisites. For mentors of different service seniority, eight significant differences were found. Three differences of opinions were found between the mentors who have mentored various quantities of kindergarten. Data from scholars and senior early childhood teachers represented significant difference in fourteen items, while mentors working in various organizations showed no apparent difference. The question about “Is the competency of administration-mentoring is one of prerequisites for early-childhood-education mentors” is still in controversy and needed for further research. Finally, the researcher proposed some suggestions based on the results to the government authorities, mentors for early childhood education, kindergarten directors, and future researchers. yuling Hsu 許玉齡 學位論文 ; thesis 160 zh-TW
