With the “Think Globally and Act Locally” concept, “River Issue” has been an important issue in environmental education. It not only helps students to cultivate their understanding of the river environment in the local community, but also helps students to get involved in ecological environmental education and treasure whatever the local community has to offer. Further more, students can gain understanding of the relationship between rivers and global relations. With the consideration of improving professionalism, the development of “Teaching Modules” helps to enhance efficiency of teaching. Based on the above purposes for research, this study is aimed to discuss integrating environmental education with higher grade level social study – the “River Issue” as an example. The objectives of the research are as follows:
1. Establish “River Issue” teaching module.
2. Discuss the results of “River Issue” teaching module.
3. Understand students’ attitude and thoughts on “River Issue” teaching module.
The researcher conducted pilot teaching with “Da-Go Stream Protection Plan” teaching module which is designed with a problem solving model. The researcher collected data through questionnaires, interview, qualitative data collection and analysis. In another word, conduct pre-test and post-test and analyze data collected. With the in class observation record, interviews of students, and worksheets, the researcher carried out a qualitative analysis. The conclusion and finding of the study are as follows:
1. It is feasible to incorporate “River Issue” environmental education into higher grade level social study.
2. River issue is close to students’ experience and interests. Field trip and observation provide a first-hand and authentic experience for students. Students enjoy the course. And their attitudes are positive.
3. The improvement of students’ test result shows “River Issue” environmental education teaching module is an effective teaching module.
