By comparison, it seemed that only a few translation studies were related to “radio dramas”. A particular characteristic of radio drama is that it is presented in sound only, which is transmitted in waves through the air. With dialogues, music and sound effects, the listeners can use their imagination and immerse themselves into the story. Colloquial language, which is completely different to the language used in literature, is frequently used in radio drama. The difficulties of translation do not include only the expressions used in colloquial language, but also of common idioms, phrases, etc. used in daily life. The spirit of this research is to resolve translation problems caused by cultural differences between two countries. There are two study objectives in this thesis. The first objective is according to the translation criticism of Katharina Reiss to evaluate and analyze the translation of “Papa, Charly hat gesagt…” by Ursula Haucke, and then to propose some solutions to those problems which are associated with the translation of radio drama. The second objective is to carry out the translation theory in a practical translation via the tactics of evaluation and analysis, and sum up some difficulties and issues of radio drama translation, offer suggestions for translating and for criticizing the translated text of radio dramas in the future. At first, this thesis probes the relevant research on the definition of radio drama, characteristics of radio drama, and translation principles of dramatic language. Later, it uses the translation criticism of Katharina Reiss, which is based on her "objective and relevant criteria" viewpoint. This criticism requires a comparison between the target and the source texts. It is necessary to make an objective and relevant evaluation by considering both linguistic (semantic, lexical, grammatical and stylistic elements) and non-linguistic factors (immediate situation, subject matter, time, place, audience and speaker factors, and affective implications). Finally, in accordance with the translation principles and examples, the suggestions pertaining to translating radio drama are summed up. In accordance with the purposes of translation, the solutions to different translation problems will be proposed. With consideration to the fluency and nature of the drama, a proposed translation solution is to use paraphrase to replace metaphrase with an explaination in the bracket of the translation given. The translation techniques of idioms and proverbs should be changed, in accordance to the common usage and expressions of the target language. The cultural flavor of the untranslatable words, which are the product of cultural differences, will be retained under this consideration, without influencing the readability of the target text or the readers’ understanding. The above suggestions will be a reference for translators and for translating radio dramas in the future, and will benefit all relevant translators.
