Abstract
The purpose of this study was to know how the portfolio assessment applied to the vocational school students’ learning effectiveness, including their cognitive learning and learning attitude. By this way, the researcher discussed the applicability of the portfolio assessment tools and the heavy going in the teaching process with solutions to the difficulties.
The subject of this study, based on case study, was the first grade class in a vocational high school in Taipei. The achievement test of music appreciation, the questionnaire of learning attitude in music appreciation, the feedback sheet of portfolio assessment, the various assessment tools in portfolio such as learning worksheet, learning journal and team worksheet, teaching journal as well as students’ interview were research tools for this study.
The conclusions of this study are as followed:
1. The portfolio assessment has an eminent effect on cognitive learning such as the distinction of outward appearance, the way of categorization, the style of performance, and the differentiation of tone in western woodwind and brass instruments.
2. The portfolio assessment has a positive influence on learning attitude such as extracurricular extension, team cooperation, and class participation.
3. Students are affirmative to the portfolio assessment tools applied to the music appreciation.
4. The difficulties in executable process of portfolio assessment include the control of teaching time, activity arrangement, criteria of evaluation, and the limitative sources.
The solutions to the difficulties suggested by the researcher contains more alternative teaching time, less homework, simplifying evaluation way, discussing the criteria of evaluation with students, and using cooperative learning to expand more sources. Besides, through instant observation and interviewing, the teacher can also help students to solve the learning problems.
