The purpose of this study was to improve students’ biodiversity knowledge and attitudes by selecting and revising biodiversity teaching activities. The quasi-experimental design adopted fifth graders from two classes at an elementary school in Tainan as research sample. One of the classes was randomly chosen as the experimental group and conducted with seven experimental teaching activities regarding biodiversity; whereas another class was comparison group who was not conducted with any experimental lessons. Before and after the teaching activities, the researchers conducted evaluation in terms of the revised questionnaire “the biodiversity knowledge and attitudes” to proceed pre-test and post-test. After each teaching activity, assessment sheets should be completed by the experimental groups
to evaluate teaching effectiveness.
Moreover, to realize students’ learning condition, the researchers invited peer-teachers to do class observation and asked students to write reflection after the activity for researchers to know more about students’ feelings. The researchers also did the self-evaluation detailing the process of classes and special events as references to
this study.
The main findings of this study were as the following:
(1) With the implementation of this course, the students’ biodiversity knowledge is greatly enhanced. However, students’ biodiversity attitudes are not improved
obviously.
(2) The experimental group students held a positive attitude about this program.
(3) The Implementation of this course can be helpful for students to learn biodiversity.
Based on the results of the study, the researchers strongly recommended that the related biodiversity issues should be scheduled with alternative learning periods, letting students learn more about biodiversity, take actions in daily life and supporting
biodiversity.
