Description
Summary:碩士 === 萬能科技大學 === 經營管理研究所 === 93 === Expatriates with social networks in host countries can reduce uncertainty and pressures that they faced there. The networks also can help them overcome overseas adjustment problems and finish expatriate tasks. Moreover, expatriate social networks constitute an under-emphasized area in expatriate literature, they deserve to be mentioned. Based on social network theory, we developed the conceptual framework and hypotheses about expatriates’ social ties. We argue that expatriates with strong social network will promote their job performance and overseas adjustment. This study proposes personal factors(core self-evaluations, extraversion and cultural knowledge about the host country)and work factors(job autonomy and boundary spanning)will affect the strength of social network. Results of statistical analyses as follows: 1.Core self-evaluations is significant for expatriate to develop expressive ties with host country nationals. 2.Core self-evaluations is significant for expatriate to develop instrumental ties with host country nationals. 3.Extraversion is significant for expatriate to develop expressive ties with host country nationals. 4.Job autonomy is significant for expatriate to develop expressive ties with host country nationals. 5.Expatriate’s instrumental ties with host country nationals is significant for job performance. 6.Expatriate’s expressive ties with host country nationals is significant for overseas adjustment. 7.Expatriate’s instrumental ties with host country nationals is significant for overseas adjustment. This study suggest that Taiwanese companies can select expatriates by evaluating their core self-evaluations and extraversion. Expatriates’ supervisors in host countries should offer expatriates more job autonomy to develop relationship. Because of developing instrumental ties with host country nationals that expatriates can promote their job performance. And to develop expressive and instrumental ties with host country nationals can facilitate their overseas adjustment. Thus, in order to finishing expatriate task, this study suggest that Taiwanese companies should build a set of system to help expatriates develop expressive and instrumental ties with host country nationals.
