The four-month study involved two classes of fourth graders in an elementary school in Taipei, which served as the control and experiment group. Both quantitative and qualitative measures such as adapted Cambridge Young Learners’ test, visual arts language test, questionnaires and interview were assigned to assess students’ English proficiency, visual arts achievement, attitudes, and homeroom teacher’s attitude toward the teaching mode. Results of quantitative measurements indicated that the experiment group had no significant difference in their listening ability after the study. However, they did achieve significant improvement in their reading and writing abilities. Moreover, the experiment group also achieved over 90% on the visual arts language test, showing students’ achievement in the English language used in the visual arts instruction. Data analysis of the questionnaires assigned before and after the study demonstrated that most students accepted the English visual arts teaching mode and thought that similar teaching mode could be implement in other subject areas. Students’ affection for both the English language and the visual arts increased after the study. Overall, the results of both quantitative and qualitative analysis demonstrated a high degree of feasibility of English as a medium for visual arts instruction in fourth-grade classroom. Suggestions for further research and for those who are interested in the integration of English language and other subject areas were offered at the end. 陳錦芬 學位論文 ; thesis 102 en_US
