The researcher conducted the child-centered play therapy for a 4-year-old boy with separation anxiety. The session was twice per week, 40 minutes per therapy for twelve sessions. The entire process was audio taped and videotaped which were later transcribed so as to look into the change process of the verbal behaviors, nonverbal behaviors, the types of play, the interaction with the counselor, the emotion and behavior patterns, and the process of the separation anxiety. The researcher conducted a three-month follow-up observation and assessment with teachers and parents to study the effect of therapy. The major findings indicate that: The child-centered play therapy can enhance separation anxiety children in their verbal behaviors, i.e., to make their verbal behaviors more relaxed and diverse. The nonverbal behaviors become gradually relaxed, playful, as well as initiative. By means of toys and exposure and probe with outside world, the child can better orient himself and transform his inner emotion. The characteristics of the overall process of play were sole play, along with some interacting play; the types of play gradually become more interactive and diverse. The accepting and warm attitude of the counselor is helpful in keeping the child away from anxiety. The child becomes more willing to interact with the counselor. The emotion and behavior patterns of the child include natural, pleasant, relaxed, attentive and initiative. Very seldom will he appear upset or offensive. The child becomes more aware of himself. In turn, he gradually eases up the separation anxiety. In terms of the effect of therapy, the child-centered play therapy has positive effect in minimizing the separation anxiety and the problem of interpersonal relation resulting from the separation anxiety. The researcher had some discussions about the findings and make some suggestions for further research and counseling practice..
