construction method, the Pin-Lin tunnelling project is far
behind original schedule. Based on the experiences learned from
the pilot tunnel of the Pin-Lin tunnel and a nearby tunnelling
project, the progressive rate of tunnel boring machine(TBM), as
well as, drill and blast(D&B) method, and the time needed for
ground pretreatment is established for reevaluation and
prediction of duration needed to complete the Pin-Lin tunnelling
project. The duration needed to complete the project by using
D&B only, TBM only, and a combination of D&B and TBM are
studied. Analytical results show that using a combination of D&
B and TBM is the best choice. In addition, the duration needed
to complete the project can further be shortened if two
additional work faces can be created through ventilation shaft.
