Youth with disabilities are pursuing postsecondary education together with peers in the general population. In fact, postsecondary education is a primary post-high school goal for more than four out of five secondary school students with disabilities who have transitionplans (Cameto, Levine, & Wagner 2004). However, despite advanced preparation in high school, students with disabilities encounter a variety of challenges as they transitionand begin to navigate college which impact their postsecondary outcomes (Conley,2008; Szafran, 2001; Wells, Sandefur, & Hogan, 2003). This study examined the perspectives of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, their parents, and Office ofAccessibility staff at the institution of higher education attended by the student and identified critical factors for successful navigation of the academic, social, and independent living demands of institutions of higher education for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Findings of this study and implications for students with ASD,parents of students with ASD, K-12 teachers and administrators, higher educationfaculty and staff, and teacher preparation programs are discussed. 2011-06-14 English text University of Akron / OhioLINK http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1302102833 http://rave.ohiolink.edu/etdc/view?acc_num=akron1302102833 unrestricted This thesis or dissertation is protected by copyright: all rights reserved.
