Description
Summary:This paper presents the results of investigations which analyze history textbooks for elemen-tary and high schools teaching, both in urban and rural areas. The objective is to determine to which extent the textbooks meet the requirements of the Brazilian National Program of Textbooks (PNLD), particularly in regard to the relationship between the contents and themes related to identity and local contexts. The rationale of the research is the existence of the PNLD, a national program for the assessment of textbooks conducted by teams connected to the universities and the Ministry of Education. The Program defines the criteria that should be met by the publishing companies to allow their books to be approved and eligible by schools and teachers. In case the books are approved and selected, they are then purchased by the Ministry of Education and distributed for free to all students of public schools. The main issue investigated by the research is if and how local cultures are presented in the textbooks, and how they were considered by the authors. The presence of local culture in the books is one of the items of the official criteria for the evaluation of textbooks. Despite the positive changes occurred in the last years, the research indicated that prejudice and mistaken conceptions are still present in the textbooks, which suggests that teachers’ education should enable them to be critical reviewers of the books they select.
