Description
Summary:Referring to books for reading approved by the Viennese Ministry of Culture and Education in 1885 for the Italian Schools of Trieste, the author explores the miscalculations of the Habsburg educational policy connected with the formation of the supranational all-monarchy identity through teaching history, geography and literature. Textbooks imposed on the public by the authorities, though being in compliance with their ideology, were difficult to read and comprehend for Italian-speaking schoolchildren and, what is more, resulted in violent protests of the Italian-speaking educated elite. The research is done with reference to the materials of the State Archive of the city of Trieste.
