Description
Summary:This article aims to explore the often contradictory union in the sociology of the Chicago School between an innovative style of research and a strongly positivist epistemological approach. I argue that such contradiction has remarkably reduced heuristic and epistemological innovation both of the results of research and of the practices adopted in fieldwork. The article critically analyzes some authors, research themes and approaches, selected as they provide the clearest examples of the rich tradition of the Chicago School. The major objective of the analysis is the highlight the major steps followed by scholars of the Chicago School in order to found sociology as a “Science of Society” through the creation of a vast research program that, it will be argued, remains anchored to prettily “scientist” analytical frames that aim to obtain a body of knowledge similar to that of “hard sciences” and formulate general laws on human society.
