Hideyo Noguchi

, also known as , was a prominent Japanese bacteriologist at the Rockefeller Institute. His discoveries led him to be one of the first Japanese scientists to gain international recognition with his obituary being featured in The New York Times and nominated numerous times for a Nobel prize in medicine.

Noguchi broadened the knowledge and diagnosis of syphilis and contributed to the long term understanding of neurosyphilis. His most notable discovery was the conclusive link between syphilis and the cause of progressive paralytic disease, establishing that psychosis could be caused by an organic agent. Additionally, Noguchi made contributions to the fields of immunology and serology. Some of Noguchi's work posthumously has been questioned, such as his misidentification of yellow fever as a bacteria and his pure culture of syphilis which was considered irreproducible.
