Roberto Farina Case

The Roberto Farina Case was a legal proceeding that attracted international attention to Brazil during the late 1970s. The case stemmed from the first male-to-female gender-affirming surgery performed in Brazil in the city of São Paulo.

Dr. Farina was sentenced to two years in prison but was subsequently absolved after the Brazilian courts concluded that gender-affirming surgery was the only way to alleviate gender dysphoria in Farina's patient, Waldirene Nogueira. Farina was supported by a team from Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade de São Paulo, who pushed for surgical intervention as a therapeutic solution for the patient. Provided by Wikipedia
