Based on the process model of assessing musical performance (McPherson & Thompson, 1998), this study examined factors that impact judges' assessment particularly in a competition setting and how the judging system can be used to improve the quality of Malaysian school bands. A qualitative analysis of transcripts of interviews with six marching band judges identified key issues relating to the ways experienced examiners use criteria in music performance assessment.
