| Summary: | Optical fibres are big business. They are displacing copper cable in most long-distance line communication systems especially in PTT networks. The rate of installation depends o n the local scenario, for example on the capacity of the existing system in relation to the demand, the capacity required, and the terrain in which cables must be laid. Thus in the United Kingdom where the system demand is increasing rapidly - the number of telephone calls alone been doubling every five or six years - some 60% of all trunk traffic is expected to be carried by optical fibres by 1990. The maximum separation between major exchanges is 30km so there is no requirement for ruggedised outdoor repeaters. In Brazil, demand is smaller, it is proposed to create a national backbone network of microwave free-space links with optical fibre links fro into the principal cities. |
