Description
Summary:Developing autonomous practice for third-year student midwives provides educators and supervisors of midwives with the opportunity to devise innovative learning and teaching strategies. A Decision Making Week activity was devised concerning decision-making tools, theory and their application to clinical experiences, risk management and clinical governance. Students undertook record-keeping audits to critique decision making. This was linked to an existing drop-in supervisor of midwives (SOM) surgery. It is anticipated that students will present key findings to their clinical colleagues as a means of sharing knowledge and developing good practice. By using audit tools as a means for reflection and education, it is hoped that midwives can gain credibility for their decision-making processes and the documentation of the decision-making audit trail. By doing so, it may encourage greater involvement and partnership-working between midwives and clients in planning care
