Description
Summary:This work has developed a code and methodology for the numerical modelling of the well known VLF Trimpi effect. The theory assumes weak Born scattering and is fully 3D. The precipitation patch is modelled as an array of scatterers, and an effective source current is computed within the patch. VLF propagation uses modal theory and employs the MODFNDR VLF propagation code of NOSC. The theory employs all VLF modes and fully incorporates intermodal scattering, unlike the theory of Inan and co-workers. The technique also does not require that the scale length of the patch be much greater than a wavelength/ Transmissions on various paths, particularly NWC to Dunedin NZ have been successfully modelled.
