Summary: | This dissertation draws on theories of social exclusion and focuses on one of its dimensions - the exclusion on the labour market. The theoretical framework is employed to analyze possible aspects of social exclusion at the labour market, with special attention given to that which has become topical in the Czech Republic recently: (long term) unemployment. As it has been previously noted, this phenomenon impends the model of inclusive society and moreover it represents a danger to human potential. The present study aims at analysis of some correlates of this problem. In this respect, deficit of human capital (low levels of education and qualification) was found as a significant determinant of long term unemployment (and therefore of social exclusion). At the same time, the sphere of education was recognized as a 'gateway' towards the labour market and employability. The study concluded that while education should be considered as an important factor in terms of prevention of social exclusion, in the Czech society there are still numerous barriers making application of the principle of equal opportunities in the educational system impossible.
