The diploma thesis focuses on the phenomenon of young Prague residents' cottaging in the present day. The author defines cottaging as all activities taking place in a dwelling in the country that was not originally built for recreational purposes. The thesis is founded on her own ethnographic survey based on the method of semi-structured interviews, namely 30 interviews conducted with cottagers for the purpose of this thesis. Mental mapping and participant observation constitute additional methods. The focal point of the project lies not only in the collection of interviews and mental maps with the cottagers, but mainly in further analysing and interpreting the collected data. The thesis also focuses on the historical development of cottaging from the 19th century to the present. Looking for the reasons and motivations that have contributed to the development and popularity of cottaging and how these motivations have changed is an important point. In her work, the author focuses on sharing the premises of the cottage with relatives and on the performance of specific work and leisure-time activities.
