The diploma thesis is focused on German foreign policy and on the change of its direction since unification of Germany. German foreign policy had focused mainly on business relations during the Cold War. Any military engagement was unacceptable in the general public opinion. The fall of the Berlin Wall and dissolution of the Soviet Union introduced new security challenges. Germany had to reassess its approach towards missions of the German army abroad because of the Alliance partners' pressure and in order to fulfill expectations rising from the new security environment. The NATO operation in Kosovo in 1999 meant a fundamental change. In spite of the absence of the UN Security Council mandate, Germany sent its troops to bomb Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in order to avoid the genocide of the Albanian population. This situation was completely new for Germany and it had started to prepare to similar operations. The reform of the German army from the defence to the expedition corps was the main step. Twelve years later, Germany had to decide whether to participate in another NATO operation to protect civilian population.
