The Phenomenon of estrangement is widely presented in the work of an Austrian author Ilse Aichinger from the 50´s of the last century. Ilse Aichinger 's unique way of writing lets the feeling of strangeness appear not only in the novel Die Gröere Hoffnung but also in the collection of short stories Rede unter dem Galgen, Der Gefesselte and in the radio play Knöpfe. The analysis of the phenomenon are carried out on the basis of the work mentioned above, the author's life and her appearance in Group 47. To reveal the influence of existentialist philosophy as well as the author´s way of thinking and writing in early post-war era, the analysis of the term 'estrangement' are conducted here. Furthemore, relating to Aichinger's life experience, the term 'higher hope' is explained.
