Summary: | Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited === This paper presents the results of a study of 12 hour local changes in mean virtual temperature of the 1000 - 700 mb layer. The objectives were; first, to obtain easily applicable rules for forecasting local changes in mean virtual temperature under various synoptic conditions with a forecast mean 5000 ft. wind and the existing mean virtual temperature gradient; secondly, to determine quantitatively the effect of such non-advective components as diurnal heating or cooling and exchange of latent heat of condensation on the resulting mean virtual temperature change. Undertaken as the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Science in Aerology, this paper was prepared at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California during the academic year 1948-1949.
