Summary: | Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. === In this theses, we propose a relational database design based on the information which the United States Military Academy is required to maintain, the frequency of use of this information, as well as current and future applications. Included in this design are the Enhanced Entity Relationship Diagram (reflecting the entities and their relationships to one another), the attributes for each entity and relationship (located in the tables), and the functional dependencies from which the diagram and tables were formed. A prototype, reflecting this design, has been built in the Oracle DBMS, which is expected to be the target system. The source data is derived from a UNISYS-based network DBMS model that is used to support the current application. As a result, a database conversion process will be executed. Relative to the conversion process, we have included general considerations for migrating data. These considerations include data validation, maintaining data quality, and a discussion of general versus specific methodologies for data migration. This theses discusses and shows how the data conversion can actually be accomplished, including the intermediate file format, and a demonstration of how actual queries may be executed on a sample data using the proposed relational design.
